  • Harvest Foodstore & Cafe

Harvest Cafe is the re-orientation of an existing organic food store, Organic Gertrude. A new commercial kitchen now opens onto the food store allowing visual access between front & back of house, floor to ceiling shelving displays shop stock & the cafe has been bought to the street front. The new cafe has simple steel frame tables & stools with ash timber tops & bench seating for either long lunches or quick coffee stops. Curved counters soften what are otherwise elemental counters.
An early self-set challenge was to avoid the current cafe trend of stretcher-bond tiles, ply & stone tops. The curved ply used on the counters is the one concession due to my not finding another material able to do curves as well. Splash-back & bench tops are compressed cement, not a tile in sight. However the underlying reason for this was to get to the philosophy of Harvest; simple forms & materials reflect Harvest's approach to produce & food in general; honest, fresh, natural, dynamic, elemental.
